About the Survey...

Daniel Stern and Associates is a diversified healthcare consulting and recruitment firm with over 37 years of experience in the specialty of Emergency Medicine. For over 20 years, we have compiled an Emergency Medicine Salary and Physician Compensation Report. The survey is not intended to be a scientific study, but rather a barometer of statistics about the marketplace. Numerous factors influence the compensation of Emergency Medicine physicians. These factors include: location, experience, training, certification, staffing levels, payer mix, fee schedule, position parameters, volume, benefits, and relative influence of managed care. Compensation varies from region to region and position to position; therefore, it is important to evaluate the unique factors influencing your ED and location.
The 2007 salary survey results, based on compensation earned in 2006. The National Results of the survey are provided free to all participants. This is the fifth year the survey has been conducted with a web-based format on our website.

2007 Emergency Medicine Fast Facts - National Data

As the number of Emergency Department patient visits continues to increase, so too, does the demand for physicians to staff those departments. Emergency Department annual patient visits increased over-all 15.96% from last year in all of the ranges between 40,000 annual visits to 100,000 annual visits.

70.5% of all survey participants reported that their Emergency Departments added additional physicians in the past 12 months and 61.5% of the participants stated that their departments planned to add additional physicians in the next 12 months.

Total compensation remained fairly steady with slight increases in all categories. The hourly rate for staff physicians increased 4% and the hourly rate for ED Directors increased 3% percent. The national average hourly rate as reported by staff physicians is $124/hour compared with $119/hour last year. (Please note that this hourly rate varies greatly in different regions of the US). The lowest hourly rate (10th percentile) was $95 for staff physicians, an increase of 22% from last year’s lowest rate (10th percentile) of $74/hour.

Survey respondents working as staff physicians and identifying themselves as partners last year reported receiving approximately $63,163 more in total compensation than base compensation (32% difference) as opposed to staff physicians who are employees who showed a difference of $33,294 (17.14%). Overall total salaries for staff physicians and ED directors at the 10th and 25th percentile are up at the national level, but total salaries at the 75th and 90th percentile are less than last year.

The number of newly hired staff physicians receiving a signing bonus jumped 22% from last year highlighting the rise in demand for Emergency Medicine physicians.

This year’s survey also attempted to gauge the impact of the medical malpractice situation in the country. This situation has caused 36.64% of responding physicians to consider giving up the practice of medicine. This is a decrease of 10% since the 2006 report.

Again this year, the three top states for relocation are California (26.25%), Florida (20.41%) and Colorado (17.44%).
